From the President
"Traditional and contemporary," "Japan and the world," "small scale and diverse choices" - although they may seem contradictory, Gakushuin Women's College harmonizes these differences to create a distinct character unavailable elsewhere.
Despite having a rich and deeply rooted tradition as an educational institution, Gakushuin Women's College was established in its current form in 1998. In this respect, we are a new university. Therefore, we are constantly developing while still maintaining our tradition.
Our Faculty of Intercultural Studies is the merging point for Japan and the world. Here, students at the Department of Japanese Studies communicate their knowledge of Japan abroad through studies in history, culture and the arts; students at the Department of Intercultural Communication dedicate themselves to comprehending international relations; students at the Department of English Communication develop their English skills and knowledge through international influences so their English communication can be put into practice both at home and abroad.
The scale of the college and the programs we provide are a positive contrast. Gakushuin Women's College is a small institution with approximately 1,700 students. Thanks to this size, however, our faculty and staff establish a close and "visible" relationship with the students. And the number of programs and courses available is comparatively high to the number of students. For students who want to broaden their knowledge beyond our available curriculum, they can enroll in the f-campus cross-registration system established through our alliance with four universities. And through international exchanges and acquisition of qualifications, students are offered diverse choices to further their paths for the future.
Through these practices, we cultivate our students to establish their individual identities to better respond to the global society.
