Resources and Facilities

Located in the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, one of the world's largest and safest cities, Gakushuin Women's College is surrounded by all that life in a big city has to offer. From museums to concert halls, shrines, temples, and a vast, efficient public transportation system, Tokyo is a mix of old and new, traditional and modern. Whether strolling down the streets of Asakusa, filled with the sights and sounds of "old Tokyo," or walking amongst the skyscrapers of Shinjuku, there is a sense of vibrant life and excitement. The city itself is a classroom, where much may be learned about the culture, tradition, and history of Japan and its capital. While situated in central Tokyo, in close proximity to the bustling Shinjuku and Ikebukuro areas, the Gakushuin Women's College campus is a peaceful oasis set back from the clamor of the big city. Adorned by an iron gate dating back to 1877, the main entrance opens onto a path lined by cherry trees that form a spectacular archway of blossoms in early April. Gakushuin Women's College offers all of the advantages of an urban campus, providing an ideal setting for the pursuit of higher learning.

Gokei-kaikan Student Center

Containing the cafeteria, tea room, lounge, and student lockers, this multi-purpose student center serves as a hub of student life. Meeting rooms, Japanese-style rooms and a dance studio are located on the third floor, bringing students together for various extra-curricular activities. The Alumnae Organization, located in the Student Center, organizes classes in the traditional arts.

Health Services

Addressing the health concerns of students, the Student Health Center is staffed by registered nurses able to provide aid for medical problems occurring on campus. An annual medical check-up for students, medical consultation, and referral to specialists is also offered through the Health Center. In conjunction with the Center, the C.A.T. (Come and Talk) counseling room provides counseling services to meet the emotional needs and concerns of students.

Language Education Center

Created for the purpose of furthering language education, the Language Education Center is located on the fourth floor of the Yamaji Fumiko Hall, and holds supplementary English language classes throughout the year for students ranging in age from elementary school to the university level as well as an intensive English Seminar in August.

International Cultural Center

Home to the administrative offices of Gakushuin Women's College, Yamaji Fumiko Hall also contains the Language Education Center, classrooms, LL classrooms, and an audio-visual hall.

Library

A recipient of the Japan Library Association Architectural Award, library of Gakushuin Women's College houses a collection of　170,000 volumes and 2,700 journals. Equipped with video viewing booths and a computer room, it also has a glassed-in lounge for meetings or conversation.

Housing

A women's dormitory for international students is located within a 20-minute walk from the campus. Accommodating 12 women in 6 suites, each with its own cooking facilities, the room charge is ¥38,000/month with an initial ¥20,000 non-refundable deposit. Apart from the dormitory, Room are available in the International Student Village, short subway ride away. Homestays may be arranged at ¥60,000/month, which includes breakfast and dinner.

Extracurricular Activities

Realizing that education takes place not only within the classroom but without as well, Gakushuin Women's College offers much in the way of extracurricular activities for its students. From sports to art, music, and volunteer groups, the College has over thirty clubs. Students also have the option of joining the extracurricular activities offered through Gakushuin University.

College Festivals

Two of the most popular events on campus are the Miyabi Festival, held in April, and the Yawaragi College Festival, which takes place in mid-October. Bringing together students, faculty, and members of the community, these two festivals feature traditional cultural events, concerts, art exhibits, and presentations by the various extracurricular clubs.
