Degrees Awarded

Gakushuin Women's College is a four-year tertiary program. It is approved by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan and by the Japan University Accreditation Association. The following degrees are awarded to students who have fulfilled the course credit requirements for their respective programs :
Bachelor of Arts in Japanese Studies (Department of Japanese Studies)
Bachelor of Arts in Intercultural Communication
(Department of Intercultural Communication)
Bachelor of Arts in English Communication
(Department of English Communication)
Master of Arts in Intercultural Studies (Graduate School)

Enrollment

The entering class enrollment target is 340 (Japanese Studies 140, Intercultural Communication 170, English Communication 45), including 20 international students, and a small number of Japanese returnee students and mature students. Transfer students are also accepted into the third-year class, for a total enrollment of about 1, 440 students. There are 41 full-time faculty members who are supplemented by well over 100 part-time faculty members, many of whom have backgrounds and careers in such fields as the foreign service, journalism, and corporate administration. The student to faculty ratio is approximately 10 to 1.

Credits and Requirements

As the language of instruction at Gakushuin Women's College is Japanese, regular international students are required to be competent in the language (JLPT Level 1). Exchange students should have at least one year of university study of Japanese or equivalent prior to their arrival in Japan. Language instruction is offered by the college, however, and students will find a variety of Japanese language courses tailored to meet their needs. Classes carry 2 credits per semester per course. A minimum of 134 credits is required for graduation. Transfer of credits from and to other institutions in Japan and abroad is possible with certain restrictions. Gakushuin University and the Women's College allow cross registration and credit transfer with certain restrictions. A four-semester upper-level seminar and graduation thesis are completed by most students. English is the required foreign language. Other requirements include Introduction to Computers and Environmental Studies.

Entrance Examinations and Application

The two-semester academic year begins in April.
Spring semester: April to August (classes, April to July)
Fall semester: September to March (classes, Sept. to Jan)
The regular entrance examination is held in February. The entrance examinations for Japanese returnees and foreign students are held in the fall. The Graduate School holds examinations in September and February. Financial Aid and Scholarships

Various forms of financial aid and scholarships are available to international students at Gakushuin Women's College. Eligibility for scholarships and financial aid is dependent upon the student's status, either regular international student studying for the degree, or international student studying at Gakushuin Women's College on an official academic exchange from one of the foreign universities with which the college has an exchange agreement. Regular foreign students are expected to matriculate for the four years until the awarding of the undergraduate degree, while students on an official academic exchange are ordinarily enrolled for a period of no more than one year.

For Regular International Students

Partial Tuition Waiver

30% of the tuition (¥252,000) will be waived for international students with a student visa or dependent visa.

Gakushuin Women's College Scholarship

Regular Scholarship: ¥200,000 per year for international students who demonstrate commitment to their studies and are judged to be in financial need. Special Scholarship: ¥300,000 per year for international students who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship and personal character. Students who are receiving the JASSO Scholarship are not eligible for the Special Scholarship.

JASSO Scholarship

¥48,000 per month(¥65,000 for Graduate students) for twelve months is awarded to international students who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship. Students who are receiving the Special Scholarship are not eligible for the JASSO Scholarship.

Other Scholarships

Scholarships are also offered through such private foundations as Rotary, the Heiwa Nakajima Foundation and the Kyoritsu Scholarship Foundation. Shinjuku Ward also offers scholarships to students residing in Shinjuku Ward. For details of other sources of financial support, please inquire at the International Student Center.

For International Exchange Students

Tuition Waiver

The tuition will be waived for international students on an official academic exchange when so stated in the exchange agreement.

Assistance with Living Expenses (Housing)

The College offers a limited number of housing stipends of up to ¥50,000 per month. However, students who are receiving scholarships of more than ¥100,000 per month are not eligible for assistance with housing costs.

Gakushuin Women's College Exchange Student Scholarship:

A maximum of ¥500,000 is awarded annually to several students, selected by the College and the Chancellor of Gakushuin from among the international students on academic exchange.

Scholarships are also available through such sources as JASSO, and the Heiwa Nakajima Foundation.
